New tests should settle faster-than-light claims

GENEVA?? Physicists are to run new tests in May after Thursday's confirmation that a faulty connector could have been behind findings appearing to show that one of Albert Einstein's fundamental theories was wrong.

Last fall's results from the OPERA experiment appeared to contradict Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity, by suggesting that subatomic particles called neutrinos could travel fractionally faster than light.

Einstein's theory, which underpins the current view of how the universe works, says that nothing can travel faster than light. For decades, superluminal travel has been used as a science-fiction device to enable backward time travel, warp-speed exploration and other fictional wonders.

Europe's CERN research center said two possible effects had been identified that could have an influence on its neutrino timing measurement during its OPERA experiment. "New measurements with short pulsed beams are scheduled for May," it said in a statement. A similar statement was issued by Italy's INFN research center, which has been working with CERN on the experiment.

The OPERA experiment involves shooting neutrinos from CERN's facility on the French-Swiss border to INFN's Gran Sasso National Laboratory, 450 miles (732 kilometers) away. The faster-than-light finding was recorded when 15,000 neutrino beams were pumped over three years from CERN to Gran Sasson.

CERN said one of the potential effects concerned an oscillator used to provide the time stamps for GPS (Global Positioning System) synchronizations, which could have led scientists to overestimate the neutrino's time of flight.

The other effect appeared likely to be more significant in the faster-than-light finding of the original OPERA experiment.

"The second concerns the optical fiber connector that brings the external GPS signal to the OPERA master clock, which may not have been functioning correctly when the measurements were taken," said CERN. "If this is the case, it could have led to an underestimate of the time of flight of the neutrinos."

Physicists had long suspected that some experimental flaw was behind the faster-than-light results but could not put their finger on it ? until now. "A possible explanation has been found. But we won't know until we have tested it out with a new beam to Gran Sasso," CERN spokesman James Gillies told Reuters.

When the results were first reported, OPERA team members said they had checked and rechecked the experiment for many months, looking for anything that could have produced a misreading.

A second test whose results were announced in November appeared to provide further evidence that neutrinos were traveling faster than light. But many experts remained skeptical.

University of Chicago physicist Edward Blucher said the original finding would have been breathtaking if it had been true. As it was, the research inspired many spirited discussions, if few believers.

"I don't think I met anyone who said I bet it's going to be true. I think the people on the experiment worked as carefully as they could, and I think they ran out of ideas of what could be wrong and they decided to present it," he said. "Maybe they should have waited a few more months."

Mathematical tools pry clandestine information from hidden realm of the Internet

VANCOUVER ? Deep within the recesses of the Internet, extremists discuss and plot terrorist acts. But new mathematical tools that combine web crawling techniques, sophisticated algorithms and human expertise are gaining access to this ?dark side? of the Web and may help predict and prevent violence.

Researchers engaged in the ?Dark Web Project,? a program started partly in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, have developed methods for tracking the spread of dangerous ideas through certain rogue and jihadi Web forums. Using a mathematical model known as SIR, used by epidemiologists to describe the transmission of disease, researchers have determined that the infection rate for becoming a suicide bomber is 2 in 10,000, Hsinchun Chen of the University of Arizona in Tucson reported February 18 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

?Violence in social media is infections of the mind,? said Chen.

The Dark Web Project, housed at the University of Arizona, collects information from blogs, forums and other websites from hidden realms of the Web. Search engines typically explore only what?s known as the publicly indexable web. The invisible Web, which includes these Dark Web forums, is estimated to contain 500 times as much information as the surface web.

Dark Web forums are particularly tough to crack. There?s no centralized index of forums, and access is often restricted to people who have to apply and be approved, which can take weeks. Using mathematical approaches to identify and target forums from known extremist sites and less obvious places, such as an AOL group, people then apply for membership. If they can gain access, the researchers then need to assess things like how often the site downloads information and how many connections it has. Then they can use a crawling or ?spidering? technique to collect and index information from the forums.

Authorship analysis techniques can then reveal what messages come from the same individual. The approach is up and running for English and Arabic, and in process for French, Urdu and Pashto, said Chen.

Such analyses, whether of Dark Web forums or mentions of influenza on Twitter, can be fraught with difficulty, said Vinton Cerf, chief Internet evangelist for Google. Words may be misspelled, and new phrases are invented every day.

The analyses of the Dark Web forums suggest that the longer participants are involved in a forum, the more violent their messages become.

Many of the collected threads are now available for researchers through a Dark Web Forum Portal, which contains more than 15 million messages. The team has also started a video portal where video content, who posted it and comments on it can be explored. In the two months that researchers have been working on the video portal, they?ve archived more than 7 million messages and 850,024 threads.

Oil jumps to 9-month high after Iran cuts supply

Oil prices jumped to a nine-month high above $105 a barrel on Monday after Iran said it halted crude exports to Britain and France in an escalation of a dispute over the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark March crude was up $1.91 to $105.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier in the day, it rose to $105.21, the highest since May. The contract rose 93 cents to settle at $103.24 per barrel in New York on Friday.

Markets in the United States are closed Monday for the Presidents Day holiday.

Iran's oil ministry said Sunday it stopped crude shipments to British and French companies in an apparent pre-emptive blow against the European Union after the bloc imposed sanctions on Iran's crucial fuel exports. They include a freeze of the country's central bank assets and an oil embargo set to begin in July.

Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi had warned earlier this month that Tehran could cut off oil exports to "hostile" European nations. The 27-nation EU accounts for about 18 percent of Iran's oil exports.

The EU sanctions, along with other punitive measures imposed by the U.S., are part of Western efforts to derail Iran's disputed nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran denies the charges, and says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Analysts said Iran's announcement would likely have minimal impact on supplies, because only about 3 percent of France's oil consumption is from Iranian sources, while Britain had not imported oil from the Islamic republic in six months.

"The price rise is more a reflection of concerns about the further escalation in tensions between Iran and the West," said commodity analyst Caroline Bain of the Economist Intelligence Unit. "Banning the tiny quantities of exports to the U.K. and France involves very little risk for Iran ? indeed quite the opposite, it catches the headlines and leads to a higher global oil price, which is something Iran is very keen to encourage."

Oil prices also rose on hopes that Greece's new bailout deal will be approved on Monday as well as by China's decision to boost money supply bid to spur lending and economic growth. China's central bank said Saturday it will lower the ratio of funds that banks must hold as reserves, a move that frees tens of billions of dollars.

Oil has jumped from $96 earlier this month amid optimism the global economy may grow more this year than previously expected. J.P. Morgan raised its Brent crude price forecast to as high as $135 from $120 ? on Monday, the April Brent crude contract was up 79 cents at $120.37 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

"Building economic momentum has the potential to pull oil prices higher for the next 12 to 24 months," J.P. Morgan said in a report.

In other energy trading in March contracts, heating oil gained 1.61 cents to $3.2050 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 3.2 cents to $3.22 per gallon. Natural gas lost 4.8 cents to $2.636 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Chasing Some Blue Sky: Crockpot Chicken Green Chili

There's nothing quite like coming home after a long day at the office, walking in and smelling dinner all ready to gobble up. ?The only way that happens in this house obviously, is if I throw something in the crockpot. ?Not sure why I don't more often because I do love, love, love food already to eat when I get home. And one of my favorite crockpot recipes is for a green chili. ?It uses mostly canned items so is about as easy as recipes come. ?I love the flavor of freshly roasted peppers, but in a pinch, the Hatch canned chilies will work as well. ?

But look how lovely fresh peppers are....

This really is just about the easiest recipe out there. ?After you spend about 5 minutes chopping the peppers, onions and potatoes, you throw them in the crockpot...

?along with some Rotel, chicken broth and chicken breasts, and allow everything ?to cook the day away. ?Since I'm gone for longer than the 5-6 hours it needs to cook, I usually either cook it on low the whole day, or make it on a day Brooklyn doesn't go to day care and I run home at lunch to let her out. ?Lunch time to dinnertime is the perfect amount of time to let the chicken cook through and let the flavors all meld together.?

This green chili is also pretty awesome for making a smothered burrito. ?For a thicker chili for burritos, ?take potato masher and roughly mash the entire stew after the chicken is removed for shredding. ?Shred the chicken a bit finer and add back to the green chili mixture. ?

Crockpot Chicken Green Chili

7-8 roasted poblano peppers ?(or 1 28 oz cans of Hatch green chilies, drained)
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 large potatoes diced1 lb chicken breasts, trimmed of fat
1 28 oz can hot Rotel tomatoes
28 oz chicken broth
1/2 tsp cumin
salt and pepper to taste
cheddar cheese, sour cream and or tortillas for toppers

1. Chop roasted green chilies and add to crockpot
2. Add minced garlic, diced onions and potatoes
3. Add Rotel and chicken broth.?
4. Add chicken breasts and press down to immerse in liquid
5. Cook on high for 5-6 hours
6. Remove chicken breasts, let cool slightly and shred. ?Return to crockpot
7. Stir and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve with chips, sour cream and cheddar if desired.
