Felice Shapiro: Imagine: No Empty Nest

Imagine a World Without an Empty Nest?

There's a big change brewing that could really wreak havoc on our empty nesting cycle.?We're talking about a move toward online learning -- imagine: your kid does not GO to college -- He does college from the comfort of your home!

Google away -- you can find plenty of stats supporting the trend away from brick and mortar schools and movement toward online learning.?And this is not the future -- this is now.?2013 is predicted to be the year that online learning becomes the preferred method of getting a higher education degree.

"The public's interest in taking online classes has skyrocketed... With an apparent shift towards online education away from traditional classroom instruction predicted to shape the educational environment of 2013, the demise of "brick and mortar" schools will inevitably be a decisive factor shaping the future of online schools and the students who attend them."

Ok, so given the rise in online education (an increase of 100% in the past year), it is in fact possible that very soon kids will not be leaving the nest for college.

You weren't ready to let them go anyway, right??You were sad, and fantasized about keeping them around forever. Want to think that through again? With kids able to do college from their bedroom computers, parents may be looking at a very, very, very long four more years.

What would the new nest look like?

I can only imagine:

  1. Social Life: Hang on parents, partying is coming back into your home. Better increase your liability insurance. Don't plan on leaving the house EVER -- it's a few years until they hit 21, and even after they do, if they are living with you, you might be fully responsible if there are accidents in your home or if their friends bounce off trees when they leave drunk.

  2. Food: If you liked your family cooking routine before, that is good news -- because you'll be doing a whole lot more of it!?Adult children are hungry critters and their feeding cycle can be 24/7. Unless you get your kid to start watching the Food Network and signing on for dinner duty -- embrace your inner cook.

  3. Cleaning House. How about a chore chart -- NOT! Just because your kids are going online at home doesn't mean they will readily adapt to your vacuuming, garbage removal and yard work routines. More likely, they won't have a clue that there's routine cleaning involved unless you put on your "outside voice" and read them the riot act.

  4. Privacy: Your child will demand theirs (of course) but you'll have none -- need I say more? Romance for you and your partner is last on the list.

  5. Re-connecting with your spouse: Get a room!?You may have a tough time finding your spot on the couch between your kids, the dog and your beloved.

  6. What time is breakfast? 2pm? It doesn't really matter for the kids -- they make their own hours online so forget any structure. Have you ever experienced kids sleeping in late on a gorgeous day??Can you say "TORTURE"?

  7. Xtreme Sleep Overs??Date night has no time limits; it can go on for days... or months. Just because their "natural cycle" of leaving the nest has been tampered with -- A kid's gotta do what a kid's gotta -- You may not want a long-term guest, but you can be sure that your offspring will be asking.

You get the picture... and it ain't pretty! In this new age of learning, I say that parents should be careful what they wish for.

Earlier on Huff/Post50:

  • Your House Is Clean

Gone is the detritus of your children's lives scattered here and there, carelessly flung about and forgotten. Your bathroom towels will stay hung neatly on their bars, the dishes are placed in the dishwasher instead of left to sit next to the sink. Beds remain made, floors remain clean, clothes are neatly put away. Mystery spills vanish, and you never wake up to a mess. Who knew it could be like this?

  • You Discover You Still Like Your Partner...Or Make A Big Change

Some couples decide that it's time to separate and move on, others remember why it was they fell in love in the first place -- or find new reasons and ways to connect to each other. Without your kids, you become each other's only companion when you're at home. It can't be overstated how much of a distraction our kids are while they are growing up. This is probably the most jolting part of the empty nest -- when you look at each other and think, "Oh wow, it's just us now." For better or worse, it will happen.

  • You Can Sleep Through The Night

No longer are you waiting for the sound of a key in the door, or the porch light to be turned off upon your children's safe return from another night out. No longer are you part of the day-to-day ups and downs of your children's lives ... no matter how often they may text/call/email/facebook message/tweet you. Their mental and physical well-being, though still hugely important to you, are their responsibilities now, and you no longer have the minutiae of their daily lives to think about like you did when they lived at home.

  • You Food Bill Drops Significantly

If your kids are in college, or even if they're not, you may still be paying for them to eat. But it's nice to go to the grocery store and come home with the things you want, and not have to buy all the things they want, things that you really don't want in your house.

  • You Have A Lot More Free Time

Initially, this may be disturbing or difficult for you to deal with. You may want to do things you've missed -- museums, movies, theater, travel or you may not want to do much of anything at all. Whatever your thing is, there's now time to do it ... a lot of time.

  • You Can Spend Time With People You Like

No longer do you have to socialize with other parents because of your children's connections. No more booster club barbecues or committee meetings, making small talk with people you most likely never would have crossed paths with if it weren't for the fact that your children were on the same team/in the same class/part of the same group of friends.

  • You Begin To Experience Your Children As Young Adults

Your children leave home and, for better or worse, they have to grow up, no matter how much help you may be giving them financially OR emotionally. There are just too many daily things to manage, too many random people to deal with, too many bumps and blips that they have to encounter on their own that leads to them, inevitably and sometimes painfully, growing up. It can be liberating when kids take over, driving or planning or explaining -- giving up some authority is in many ways a big relief.

  • Your Kids Come To Visit...

There's nothing quite as wonderful as seeing your kids after weeks or months apart, especially when they first go away to college. Their faces are familiar and beautiful, their smiles just for you, their laundry ready to be washed...it's such a thrill to have them home for holidays, or summers, or a weekend visit. Within minutes of their return, it's as though they never left. You love having them home for a while, but then...

  • ...Then They Go Back Where They Came From

    Enough said.

  • Your Future Is Yours

Remember before kids, when you would dream and plan for the rest of your life? Remember when it was wide open, and you had no idea what would happen next? Well, you can do that again, now that you're an empty-nester. No longer do you have to worry about childcare, or kids missing school, or whether they'll like the place you pick to go on vacation -- your time, your future, and your life is yours to create. Always wanted to travel? Now you can. Go back to school? Now's the time. Write a book? Get cracking. You have your life to live, just as they have theirs. Go do it!

Photo-Canvas photo canvas print review

I don’t consider myself a true photographer, but I love taking pictures and every so often I manage to snap one that I’m really proud of… like the one above, which I captured last year on a vacation to Lake Michigan. When London based Photo-Canvas.com asked if I would be interested in reviewing their photo [...]

Putin and Merkel set for a prickly Russian-German summit?

When Russian President Vladimir Putin flies to Germany on Sunday to open this year's Hannover Messe, the world's biggest industrial fair, it will be one of those key milestones ? like the upcoming Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and Russia's chairmanship of the G-20 this year ? that demonstrate to the world that Russia is back as a leading global power and economic force to reckon with. The famous exhibition this year features a Russian theme and a record number of Russian exhibitors.

Also on display will be the German-speaking Putin's polite and professional, if not terribly warm, relationship with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The two leaders preside over economies that have largely defied the global economic crisis, and the growing trade and economic cooperation between them is one of the few bright rays of light in an otherwise cloud-strewn European picture.

But troubles may be brewing, mainly driven by growing German public concern over the effects of Russia's domestic turn to the right. Since Putin returned to the Kremlin for an unprecedented third term about a year ago, the country has seen the introduction of draconian laws to curb public protests, a crackdown on politically active NGOs, and measures to censor the Internet.

RECOMMENDED: Do you know anything about Russia? A quiz.

Experts say that Ms. Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany and speaks fluent Russian, is much more willing to hold Russia to account for human rights violations than her predecessor, Gerhard Schr?der, who built a strong personal relationship with Putin before he left office in 2005, and who once referred to the Kremlin leader as an "immaculate democrat."

Mr. Schr?der later took a lucrative job as a director of Nord Stream, the Russian-sponsored natural gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea that went online in 2011.

"True, Russian leaders had good relations with Schr?der, especially after he left office. That makes you wonder about his motives for being well-disposed toward Russian leaders, doesn't it?" says Alexei Kuznetsov, head of the department of European studies at the official Institute of World Economy and International Relations in Moscow.

"There's no negative relationship between Putin and Merkel. There might be a bit of cooling there. Sure, Germans are not happy about some things going on in Russia, but we're not always thrilled by what's happening in Europe," he says.

'INCREASING ALIENATION'

The relationship has also been rocked, in ways that are not yet completely clear, by last month's banking crisis in Cyprus. The little Mediterranean island state has served over the past two decades as a major offshore zone for wealthy Russians, and even Russian state companies, to bank profits and recycle funds into Russia. There is a widespread perception in Russia that Germany enforced tough bailout terms on Cyprus, which will likely lead to major losses for Russian account holders in Cyprus' two leading banks, precisely because rich "Russian oligarchs" would bear much of the pain.

"Germany has been traditionally Russia's key political and economic partner in the European Union. However, over the past two years ? and especially with the return of Vladimir Putin as Russian president ? there has been an increasing alienation between Moscow and Berlin," says Nadya Alexandrova-Arbatova, head of the department of European political studies at the official Institute of World Economy and International Relations in Moscow.

"Russia has been disappointed with the EU crisis, which has already resulted in damage to the EU's reputation as a model of competent economic policy management. From [Putin's] point of view, Europeans are in no position to lecture other countries on good governance and democracy.... Germany has been much criticized for its management of the eurocrisis, and the continuing failure to find a solution for the problems in Cyprus that isn't at odds with Russia's interests," she adds.

Last November, as Putin's crackdown gathered steam, the German Bundestag (parliament) passed a 17-point resolution, authored by the German government's special coordinator for Russian affairs Andreas Schockenhoff, that demanded Russia observe European norms of human rights and democracy. In a subsequent meeting with Putin in the Kremlin, Merkel broke with Schr?der's tradition of not overtly criticizing the Kremlin over alleged human rights violations and asked the Russian leader to explain the harsh prison sentence meted out to two members of the Pussy Riot feminist performance art collective last summer.

Making matters much worse, late last month Russian authorities launched a still-ongoing wave of police raids, apparently aimed at intimidating hundreds of NGOs across the country. Several German-funded groups, including two that are tied to Germany's leading political parties ? the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation ? were among those targeted.

"Our foundations and their partners in Russian society play an important role in the development of German-Russian relations. Measures that impair their work or criminalize them damage our relations," German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told journalists last week.

Merkel is now under intense pressure from human rights groups and political opponents ? Germany faces hotly-contested parliamentary elections in September ? to go much further in holding Putin's feet to the fire during her meeting with him this weekend.

"Trade fairs are about doing business, but Merkel should make clear to Putin that it cannot be business as usual for Germany?s relations with Russia until the attacks on civil society stop. This is the worst crackdown in Russia in 20 years," Hugh Williamson, Europe director for the New York-based Human Rights Watch said in a statement this week.

BUSINESS IS BUSINESS?

But Russian experts argue that the economic fundamentals of the relationship are solid, and that the public mood in Germany will not be allowed to interfere with burgeoning bilateral trade, which was approaching $100 billion in 2012, buoyed mainly by Russian energy exports to Europe and imports of German cars, machinery, and consumer goods. Germany is Russia's second biggest trading partner in the world, after China, while Russia clocks in at a respectable 11th place among Germany's trading partners.

Russian state companies have invested heavily in German assets, particularly energy infrastructure, while many leading German corporations have ignored Russia's endemic corruption and shaky legal foundations in recent years to set up industrial operations in Russia.

Experts say that even if political relations cool a bit, the economic factor has simply become too important to sacrifice on the altar of human rights. They say Putin may face a few gentle, formal criticisms from Merkel this weekend, but nothing resembling the acrimonious dialogue that has thrown Russia's relationship with the US into full reverse in recent months.

"There is a media campaign in Germany, and Europe, which seems designed to convince Western society that relations between us are not good. But I see no basic reason for a chilling of relations," says Vladislav Belov, head of the Center for German Studies at the official Institute of Europe in Moscow.

"Merkel and Putin have professional, emotion-free personal relations. And what we will see is a 'discussion' about human rights issues that will cover the ground, but will not involve any scolding or lecturing of Putin by Merkel. There's too much at stake for that," he says.

Search for Calif. hikers fruitless; hope not lost

(AP) ? Rescuers working in sometimes dangerously rugged terrain combed Southern California's Cleveland National Forest for two lost hikers late Wednesday, but the third day of searching had proved fruitless as darkness fell.

There was no evidence of foul play and authorities believe the teens are in the area, in part because a 911 call made before their mobile phone died was traced to a cell tower near the location, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. John Muir.

"Their probability for survival is good," he said, adding that the nights have been mild and the days not too hot.

"We're not stopping until we find them."

So far, nothing has been found in the area where mountain bikers glimpsed what they believed to be a light in heavy brush Tuesday night off of a trail, he said.

The aerial search was to end at nightfall Wednesday but would resume Thursday at first light, Muir said.

Nicholas Cendoya, 19, and Kyndall Jack, 18, were last heard from Sunday night when they called for help on a cellphone. The phone's battery later died.

The two are believed to have gone off trail near Holy Jim Trail, a tree-lined dirt path along a creek that leads to a waterfall and is popular with day hikers.

In the call, they said they were about a mile from their car, which was parked at a trailhead, but rescuers have expanded the search.

"When you're disoriented because you're out of breath and tired and you think you're 1 mile away, you could be potentially 3 or 4 miles away," Muir said. "There's a lot of ground to cover."

It was unclear whether the lost hikers carried water and Kyndall's father, Russ Jack, said he worried that after three days the pair might be dehydrated. But he still has hope.

"So at this point everybody's still upbeat, optimistic about finding the kids in good shape and alive," he told TV reporters.

About 50 searchers, some on horseback and aided by dogs, moved back and forth through chest-high brush across mountain ridges.

The U.S. Forest Service gave permission to cut brush on a mountain peak to land a helicopter, which allowed LA County sheriff's personnel and two dogs to be taken to a canyon northwest of the pair's car, Orange County Sheriff's Department Lt. Erin Guidice told the Los Angeles Times.

That area was chosen because of the nearby cell phone tower that picked up the 911 call, she said.

Four helicopters also dropped search and rescue teams in the forest all day Wednesday, Muir said.

Jack's car was left in a parking area. Her mother drew a message on the dusty windshield that read: "Kyndall - we r looking wont stop love you mom" and signed it with a heart. Jack's family towed away the car Tuesday night, KABC-TV reported.

The area is in a section of the national forest in the Santa Ana Mountains, which lie along the border of Orange and Riverside counties southeast of Los Angeles. The trail ranges in elevation from about 2,000 feet to about 4,000 feet.

Tigers Twins: Detroit Goes Quietly In 8-2 Loss To Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS -- During this cold, windy opening series at Minnesota, questions about the strength of Detroit's bullpen went unanswered.

The Tigers, though, were equally ineffective at the plate.

Mike Pelfrey pitched into the sixth inning less than a year after having Tommy John surgery, Josh Willingham and Trevor Plouffe hit home runs and the Twins beat the Tigers 8-2 on Thursday to take two out of three games from the defending American League champions.

The Tigers totaled eight runs and 24 hits in the series, with only three for extra bases, all doubles.

"We just couldn't get the big hit today, myself included. You don't want that to happen all the time," said Torii Hunter, who struck out with runners at second and third and no outs in the seventh.

Pelfrey (1-0) did not allow an earned run. The former New York Mets first-round draft pick was given a 3-2 lead when Willingham and Plouffe went deep against Tigers starter Rick Porcello (0-1), and five relievers kept it that way for four innings.

Then the Twins broke the game open with a five-run eighth against Brayan Villarreal, when Pedro Florimon hit a two-run double and Aaron Hicks added a two-run single for his first major league hit. Tigers relievers gave up 10 runs over 10 innings in these three games, and coincidentally or not they agreed on a minor-league contract with former closer Jose Valverde before the game.

But aside from another RBI for Miguel Cabrera, his fourth of the year, the Tigers went quietly.

Starting pitching is supposed to be Minnesota's biggest weakness, the primary reason why the Twins lost 195 games the last two years. But Vance Worley, Kevin Correia and Pelfrey allowed five earned runs in 18 1-3 innings in this series, a 2.45 ERA.

"I know this team is going to mash. We're going to have some fun and win some games," Hunter said.

Austin Jackson's double in the seventh was Detroit's first extra-base hit in 21 innings since Hunter's double in the third inning of Monday's opener, the only game the Tigers won. Cabrera was walked intentionally with one out to load the bases. But Prince Fielder struck out on a checked swing against Tyler Robertson and Victor Martinez popped out against Casey Fien to end the threat.

"I'll take my chances with that scenario every time, second and third and nobody out," manager Jim Leyland said. "We had some opportunities."

The 6-foot-7 Pelfrey was a fixture in the Mets' rotation for four-plus seasons until the elbow problem popped up. He made three starts last year before undergoing the ligament replacement procedure. So Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was smiling afterward when describing how he tried to take Pelfrey out after five innings only to be rebuffed.

Dr. James Andrews performed the operation last May 1 in Gulf Breeze, Fla., making Pelfrey's comeback a little more than 11 months. The right-hander gave up two unearned runs, five hits and two walks in 5 1-3 innings, with one strikeout. He trailed 2-0 before the Twins found their power stroke, but even those runs weren't his fault. Throwing errors by catcher Joe Mauer and the shortstop Florimon led to runs in the first and the third.

That was all the Tigers managed, though.

"That's baseball. Sometimes they're going to get the better of you," said Alex Avila, who is 1 for 10. "We had opportunities and missed them. We've had good at-bats, but haven't been able to push those runs across and open up the game. We'll get there eventually."

Porcello has been a durable if unspectacular part of Detroit's rotation the last four seasons, striking out a career-high 107 batters in 2012, but April has never been his best month. The right-hander didn't pitch badly, yielding six hits and two walks in 5 1-3 innings while striking out two. But he gave up the lead in the third when Mauer's two-out single was followed by Willingham's tying two-run shot into the seats in left-center.

In the fourth, Plouffe hit one even higher and further that clanked off the facade of the second deck above the same spot in the ballpark. Willingham and Plouffe were the top two power hitters for the Twins last year, with 35 and 24 home runs respectively.

NOTES: Martinez had two singles, his first multi-hit game since Sept. 28, 2011. ... The Tigers have their home opener Friday afternoon against the New York Yankees, with RHP Doug Fister scheduled to pitch against RHP Ivan Nova. Fister is 10-3 with a 2.52 ERA in 18 starts at Comerica Park since he was acquired in August 2011.

Ross apologizes for lyrics deemed pro-rape

NEW YORK (AP) ? Rick Ross has formally apologized for lyrics some have called pro-rape.

Thursday's apology ? in the form of a tweet ? came the same day a women's group, UltraViolet, planned a protest outside of one of his sponsors, Reebok, in Manhattan.

In Rocko's song "U.O.E.N.O," Ross raps about giving a woman the drug MDMA, known as Molly, and having his way with her. The song was released in January but just recently began getting widespread notice.

Although last week Ross said his lyrics were misinterpreted, he tweeted Thursday that he doesn't condone rape and apologized for lyrics that were "interpreted as rape."

He also offered "apologies to my many business partners, who would never promote violence against women," specifically mentioning Reebok and UltraViolet.

PR News | Don't Say This In A (PR Agency) Interview | Crenshaw ...

With or without relevant experience, it?s tough to secure an interview for that first job or next best career step. So when you do nail it, you want to make the most of it. Employers differ, but I have a mental list of ?red-flag? responses that make me wonder if the candidate is a fit for my firm, or even for public relations overall. After a straw poll of other employers in PR, I?ve come up with a short, and subjective, list of things not to say in a PR firm interview.

?I?m a people person.? It may be a personal quirk, but this one is the most cringeworthy in my book. It immediately makes me see the candidate in a Cruise Director?s uniform. Yes, relationship-building is important in our business, but ?I?m a people person? is facile, smacks of naievete and does nothing to differentiate. It might make sense in an interview in hospitality or customer service, but I think it?s better unsaid.

?I?m the most qualified person you?ll meet!? This and similar proclamations could suggest an arrogance that isn?t appealing. It?s better to offer specific anecdotes that illustrate why you?re qualified, motivated, or dedicated. Sweeping statements, in general, are weaker than examples.

?How quickly can I be promoted?? Ambition is a good thing, as is having set goals. But the timing is wrong here. Save it for after you?ve proven your skills and work ethic. Talking about advancement prematurely, or in the wrong way, can make you look superficial or overly title-conscious.

?What kind of ads do you create?? You must ask questions, but make sure that they don?t betray a lack of knowledge about the industry or company.

?I wasn?t being given enough independence and creative freedom in my last job.? For some employers, this translates as, ?I?m hard to manage.? While it may be important to offer reasons for your planned move, be careful to speak in positive terms, and whatever you do, be respectful of your current boss and company.

?I have lots of ideas for your clients X and Y.? This one depends on timing and approach. It?s wise to be ready with thoughts about the company, and, in the case of an agency, its key clients, but feel out the interviewer with some general questions (?What are your key initiatives for client X?) before you share your ideas.

?My last boss and I had a personality conflict.? This is simply a cliche, and it sounds hollow. You may be better off explaining a poor fit by saying something like, ?I discovered that I work best as part of a team, but the agency structure wasn?t developed for that.?

?We just got an RFP from client X.? I can?t count how many times a junior staffer from another agency has volunteered information that shouldn?t be shared in a routine interview. If you?re working at an agency and interviewing at a competitor, take care not to divulge anything proprietary or inappropriate, including new business pending, confidential client insights, or office gossip.

You covered everything so thoroughly that I don?t have any questions. You must have questions. Even if this is your umpteenth interview at the company, have a question in your back pocket, or ask the interviewer to elaborate on something she said. It?s not fair, but having no questions can make you look incurious, passive, or disengaged.

How Parallel Universes Actually Work, Scientifically

Parallel universes are basically the most popular trope in science fiction, because Batman and Spider-Man in alternate universe costumes are awesome, and also human existence is inherently full of awful, soul-crushing regret. But how does the science actually work? More »

Militants kills 7, kidnap 4 in attack in Pakistan

(AP) ? Several dozen militants armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades attacked a power grid station in northwestern Pakistan before dawn Tuesday, killing seven people and taking four hostage, police said.

The attack on the outskirts of Peshawar city occurred at around 2 a.m., said the local police chief in the area, Granullah Khan. The militants first killed two people at the scene of the attack and took nine with them, he said.

The militants then killed five of the hostages as they were fleeing and were pursued by police, said the police chief. The bodies were found about a kilometer (half a mile) away from the grid station. Four of the abducted were still missing.

The dead included three policemen and four government power workers, said Khan. The men still missing are all power workers.

The grid that was attacked is located near Khyber, part of Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region bordering Afghanistan, the main sanctuary for the Taliban in the country. It supplies electricity to a large part of Peshawar, and many areas of the city were still without power on Tuesday morning because the station was damaged in the attack.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. But Taliban militants waging a bloody insurgency against the government have staged scores of attacks against security officials, government personnel and civilians.

The Pakistani military has launched dozens of operations against the Taliban in the tribal region, but the militants continue to carry out frequent attacks. The group has also made recent gains in an area of Khyber called the Tirah Valley, which potentially provides them easier access to Peshawar.

There are concerns the militants could step up attacks in the run-up to parliamentary elections on May 11 in an attempt to derail the vote.

PFT: Smith says slights on work ethic 'untrue'

Adam JonesAP

The typical civil lawsuit works this way:? (1) the plaintiff sues the defendant; (2) if the case doesn?t settle and the plaintiff wins at trial, the plaintiff obtains a judgment; (3) if the defendant doesn?t pay the judgment voluntarily, the plaintiff must then chase the defendant to get the money.

The recent New York Daily News article regarding Bengals cornerback Adam Jones? lingering legal morass creates the impression that the case against Jones is following that basic linear path.? Jones was sued by Tommy Urbanski after the notorious ?make it rain? incident from early 2007 that left Urbanski paralyzed, Urbanski secured a $13.4 million judgment against Jones, and Urbanski has now filed paperwork in Ohio to seize a portion of Jones? football salary to satisfy part of the debt.

From Jones? perspective, it?s a bit more complicated than that.

Jones? agent, Peter Schaffer, explains that the judgment against Jones isn?t even final yet, with legal issues pending on appeal in Nevada.? One of the biggest questions, according to Schaffer, is whether Nevada law recognizes a claim for ?negligent infliction of emotional distress? without an underlying assault or battery.

In English, this means that there?s a question as to whether Jones legally can be responsible to Urbanski when Jones didn?t shoot Urbanski or otherwise have any physical contact with him.? That issue, Schaffer explained, needs to be resolved by the Nevada Supreme Court.

The broader question is whether Jones can be held fully responsible for the $13.4 million judgment when multiple other defendants (including the shooter) also have been found liable to Urbanski.? This gets into notions of ?joint and several liability,? an area of the law that typically arises when, for example, one defendant who was primarily responsible for someone?s injuries has little or no money to pay a judgment and another defendant with limited culpability but greater financial resources is asked to pay the entire judgment.

The problem for Jones is that, in this case, he?s got the closest thing to a ?deep pocket.?? Though Jones will never be able to fork over the full amount (absent a Powerball jackpot or his own eight-figure lawsuit), Urbanski can try to get at Jones? assets in order to partially satisfy the debt.? Urbanski is doing that by attempting to obtain a piece of Jones? paycheck from the Bengals.

In Ohio, however, the maximum wage garnishment is 25 percent for all creditors.? With Urbanski getting in line behind other creditors (including the IRS) and with the judgment against Jones, according to Schaffer, not finalized, Urbanski likely will continue to wait for compensation from the shooting.

Of course, if Jones weren?t at least partially liable, Urbanski would be left with claims against various defendants who are what lawyers call ?judgment proof.?? In this case, the fact that one of the responsible parties plays in the NFL gives Urbanski a path for obtaining partial satisfaction of the judgment.

Schaffer also said that he has been trying to work out a settlement with Urbanski?s lawyers, given that the case is unresolved and that Jones most likely will never be able to pay the full amount.? In an apparent effort to put pressure on Jones, Urbanski?s lawyers have leaked portions of emails containing settlement negotiations to the media.? That could make it harder as a practical matter to strike a deal, since it creates issues of mistrust between the lawyers.

Absent a settlement, it appears that the situation still has a long way to go before it will be resolved.

Toy model of Jabba The Hutt's palace resembles a mosque, group says

Lego

Birol Kilic, chairman of the Turkish Cultural Association of Austria, says the Lego play set modeled on the Jabba The Hutt alien's fictional home was culturally insensitive.

By Carlo Angerer, Producer, NBC News

MUNICH ? Danish toy maker Lego plans to stop selling a model of the ?palace? of slug-like Star Wars character Jabba The Hutt after complaints that it resembles a revered mosque, according to a group that raised the grievance.

Birol Kilic, chairman of the Turkish Cultural Association of Austria, said Monday the play set modeled on the obese alien?s fictional home was culturally insensitive.

Birol Kilic, chairman of the Turkish Cultural Association of Austria, said the Lego version of Jabba The Hutt's palace resembles Istanbul's Hagia Sophia, a historic mosque that became a model for other centers of Islam and is now a museum.

?This does not belong in?children?s bedrooms,? he said. ?And the minaret-like tower features machine guns. Children will become insensitive to violence and other cultures.?

After a meeting between his organization and the company last week in Munich, Germany, Lego promised to stop selling the play set, Kilic said.

Lego posted on Twitter Monday that it has always intended to stop selling the item at the end of the year. ?We only keep a product in the assortment for a few years and it was scheduled to exit in 2013 from launch,? the tweet said.

However, there was no mention of those original plans in a January press release which said: ?The LEGO Group regrets that the product has caused the members of the Turkish cultural community to interpret it wrongly.?

Roar Trangb?k, a Lego spokesman, on Monday denied that the group had anything to do with their decision.

?The decision to terminate this particular product is not based on any dialogue with the mentioned community,"?Trangb?k said. "We regret the misinterpretation but we fully stand behind the product.?

Trangb?k also said that it is the company's policy not to design models that depict religious structures.?

The Danish toy giant has in recent years made building sets modeled on hit movies including Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars.

In the 1983 science-fiction blockbuster ?Return of the Jedi?, Jabba uses Princess Leia as his slave at the palace.

Lego

Birol Kilic, chairman of the Turkish Cultural Association of Austria, says the Lego play set modeled on the Jabba the Hutt alien's fictional home was culturally insensitive.

Kilic believed that the Lego version, aimed at 9- to 14-year-olds, resembles Istanbul?s Hagia Sophia, a historic mosque that became a model for other centers of Islam and is now a museum in the Turkish city.

Kilic said his organization was notified of the issue by an outraged Austrian father, whose sister had given the Lego set to his son last Christmas. The father returned the toy to the store, Kilic said, and the Turkish Cultural Association petitioned Lego to drop the play set from its line-up.

Kilic said the issue was not merely cultural, but also a reminder that parents should be more thoughtful about what toys their kids play with.

?We?re not the Taliban of Vienna,? he said of his independent, Vienna-based organization with about 700 members, ?but we do give thought to our country and our continent.?

Natural remedies for arthritis | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 21 million adults, according to the CDC. Those with arthritis, though, don?t have to be slaves to their genetics or gym injuries; there are several natural arthritis remedies to help heal joint pain and inflammation.

?

What is arthritis and what causes it?
The two most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid (RA) and osteoarthritis. The latter is often associated with the wearing down and tearing of the cartilage, or simply not having enough cartilage after a while in a particular joint.

?

RA is an autoimmune disease, in which the body attacks itself. In addition, ?-myalgia? diseases like fibro- and poly-, could be considered varieties of arthritis because they both share similar painful symptoms in joints and muscles.

?

All forms of arthritis have one major root cause in common: inflammation.

?

One major cause of inflammation: Poor diet
From a natural, holistic perspective, the foods we eat play a significant role in inflammatory responses. David Getoff, vice president of the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation and a certified clinical nutritionist, believes that frequent consumption of common food allergens ? like wheat or soy, as well as anything loaded with sugar, or anything that quickly converts into sugar (alcohol, most grains) ? can promote inflammation, which wreaks havoc on the body?s joints.

?

?We are living organisms that contain a masterful, self-healing ability,? says Getoff. ?If we feed our bodies? the right foods and additional nutrients, our bodies can begin to heal on their own, perhaps without having to take potentially-harmful drugs.?

?

Getoff advises eating healthy ? meaning free of allergy-promoting foods ? for at least two months. According to him, it takes six weeks for wheat to clear out of the system. Perhaps due to its modern, stripped-of-nutrition, hybridized ubiquity, wheat may trigger an auto-immune reaction in many people. Make sure to cut out foods that may seem more innocuous than regular table sugar but that also may promote inflammation, like fruit, honey, molasses and agave.

?

Supplements for arthritis
A good brand of glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate, at the right dose, may help some arthritis sufferers. The same goes for hyaluronic acid, which is used in beauty treatments much for the same reason it may help some with arthritis, due to its hydrating properties. The fatty acid, Cetyl myristoleate, also seems to be an effective joint lubricant and anti-inflammatory. It was isolated in Swiss albino mice, which for some Darwinian wonder, never develop arthritis.

?

Best forms of exercise for arthritis
The bodybuilding mantra, ?No pain, no gain,? may have had cache in hardcore gyms back in the 1980s but these days, if you have arthritis, you want to choose exercises that cause your joints no pain whatsoever. Perhaps the best way for arthritis sufferers to gain strength and cardiovascular endurance with very low risk of further joint wear and tear is aquatic exercise.

?

Whether it?s a gentle water aerobics class or Olympic-style sprints, swimming can also help burn excess body fat. Pool jogging in waist-high water is also a simple yet highly effective way to burn calories without placing a heavy burden on the joints.

?

Gentle stretching or yoga is also advised for those with arthritis to help get back some range of motion.

?

If you prefer cycling, rock climbing, but those activities (or any other) exacerbate your condition, reduce the frequency of the activity.?

?

Ice or heat?
Both ice and heat have their merits when treating arthritis. Like treating an injury, ice seems to be more effective for reducing inflammation and swelling and numbing pain, especially when symptoms appear in the first 24-48 hours. Heat, on the other hand, tends to work best for relaxing muscles and stiff joints by increasing blood flow and flexibility.

?

Reduce exposure to pollutants and help purge your body of poisons
Even if you eat a wholesome diet loaded with antioxidants, if you are exposed to high levels of environmental pollutants such as mercury, lead, aluminum and inorganic plastic compounds, you may still develop arthritis. Various lab tests can analyze the amount of chemicals in your body. Your cookware can also be a common source of poisons entering your body. High blood levels of a man-made chemical (Teflon) used in non-stick coatings are associated with a raised risk of arthritis.

?

You need lots of friendly bugs in your gut

The billions and billions of bacteria in our guts are like an army, defending our immune system from constant bombardment. If you?ve taken several doses of antibiotics over the years and haven?t eaten healthy, take a probiotic that contains several billion micro-organisms per capsule to repopulate the gut with good bacteria. Perhaps you?ll keep autoimmune diseases such as RA at bay.
? What other natural arthritis remedies can I try?
Holistic options such as acupuncture, chiropractic medicine and rehabilitative therapy may help alleviate joint or muscle pain, even in pets.

?

Do you have arthritis? Care to suggest any other natural remedies below?
